Vocaloid: World's End Dance Hall at AniManGaki 2013

OMG a late entry! I can't believe I kept this in draft without publishing it x_X; editing the post slightly to suit the current date I suppose ahahaha ^^;

Last year, a friend of mine poison tempted me to work on a cosplay project from Vocaloid. Admittedly it was easy for me to fall for the character design for that particular song, as I have always loved Megurine Luka's "voice".

If you're curious to find out what the song is about, here's a video that you can listen to :D

There are many character design versions for this particular song, but only one caught my attention:
From left: Kagamine Len, Kagamine Rin, Kaito, Meiko, Megurine Luka, Hatsune Miku

I'll be honest; I was torn between choosing Meiko and Luka. Mainly because I adore both characters (and their voices of course!) but I had to choose only one (obviously!). So Luka it was (which is odd, since I don't quite fancy PINK to begin with)

The costume made its debut at last year's AniManGaki event held at Sunway Pyramid's Convention Centre. Admittedly I spent more time roaming about with my friends than being in the hall itself (whoops!).

Thank you so much to the photographer, Razrig, who was kind enough to snap a couple of shots of us both :)

Megurine Luka & Hatsune Miku

Would you believe that I styled the wig, made the headphones (which is a fake by the way) and Sharpie'd the lace stockings just the day before the event?

I look the same in all photos D: but I love this photo the most :D

Extra:

As I posted these photos up then, a cosplayer meme was circulating about right after AniManGaki (I think?) so I thought, aw heck why not?

On the left is my very first cosplay back in GACC 2006 (an event organized by MMU Melaka) and on the right, AniManGaki 2013 (an event organized by Sunway University if i'm not mistaken). Both pink, ironically lol

Right: Megurine Luka (World's End Dance Hall) from Vocaloid

Here's to hoping my cosplay path continues on in 2014 :D

[COSPLAY] Ragnarok Online

Oh hello there blog, it has been a very long while!

I miss blogging, to be honest, but lately I often run out of ideas of what to blog about, and when I do have an inkling of what to blog about, I'm too busy until I forget to blog! So now I'm taking this chance to blog real quick about one of my latest cosplay excursion, which was at Comic Fiesta 2012.

Many thanks to Misao for helping us taking these lovely photos, as I couldn't find the photographer that I was looking for on that day. Truly appreciate it :)

Photos are by Herman Photography
Edits are by me :)

The aftermath of Comic Fiesta & Cosplay Ball 2012

I haven't had the chance to post any updates on my Cosplay aftermath, but then again, I don't really feel like posting much updates on them! Hahahaha :P

***

Last year's Comic Fiesta 2012 was a blast for me, mainly because I got to hang out with my friends whom I rarely meet except during events (well what can I say, we are all staying too far apart!). The event itself was okay, though I didn't actively participate in any stage games/performances, I took my time browsing through the Doujin alley and found so many new inspiring amateur artists and craftsmaker out there! I feel so unproductive and small when I see the awesome works out there! D:

Anyway, since the hall was crowded (well, the crowd seems to grow every year!) I decided to take a breather and chilled out by the hallway outside with a few friends that I happened to meet along the way. Funny, I think I'm getting too old for this! D:

Instead of spamming loads of photos, I compiled camwhore-ing photos of me and my friends whom I did meet at the event instead! Sorry if your photo isn't in here, it just means that I didn't get a chance to see you, or I had forgotten to whip out my camera for this!

My cosplay for Comic Fiesta 2012

Day 1: Meiko from Vocaloid - Sandplay of the Singing Dragon

Day 2: Assassin Cross from Ragnarok Online

For those wondering what Comic Fiesta is all about, I strongly suggest that you visit their website and check out the awesome stuff that they plan every year! While you're at it, join their community and come chat with us in the #comicfiesta IRC chat channel (you need to be a registered forum user to check via this site; alternatively, try Mibbit or mIRC itself). We welcome newcomers, and hey, no one bites (much)! :D

Facebook welcomes you to CosplayBall2012

Next event I attended was the Cosplay Ball 2012. It was my first time attending after knowing of this event for two years, and I was curious about this event. Since the theme for my table was Royal Diamonds, I decided to whip up a random Original Character design for this ball - an Asian version of Facebook. Initially I wanted to head there as Twitter, but unfortunately my color scheme fits Facebook more :(

Thanks to Jamie, who was willing enough to accompany me for this event too! She dressed up in a Victorian-ish outfit (her corset didn't come in time! *sadface*) and we headed there with RRJ (who dropped by for a quick makeover).

Fun fact: My headgear, "Facebook" Icon, and "Like" Icon was done in less than 6 hours before the event itself! The headgear was actually bought, but I added beads and made the "Facebook" icon drop which I attached to the headgear :)

Unfortunately, I found the event to be rather a bore for me, but I think it's because I don't know almost 80% of the people there, which made me feel somewhat isolated and old. Hahahaha ^^; I'm not much of a social butterfly so that's probably why as well.

Overall the event was okay, but I noticed that some parts of the itinerary became rather draggy after awhile, causing everyone who was not involved to wander around restlessly (outside was a hit somehow, since there was a mini photo booth by HermanPhotography and several other booths selling cosplay-related products). I myself wandered in and out of the hall more than once!

One big flaw that I feel the hotel management lacked was that the refreshments ran out really fast, and no one bothered refilling the jugs after that. No, not even water. I understand if the management does not want to refill the food or cordial/coffee/tea drinks but really, not even water? Especially when the drinks ran out in less than 2 hours :/

Me and Jamie, posing for the camera

We wanted to have an IRCfiesta photo, but there were still others who did not make it in this photo *sadface*

Managed to take photos as usual! Notice the amount of photo bombs I got? Hahahahaha

Even so! It was great to hang out with friends towards the end of 2012, and I thank everyone for dropping by to say hi or even glomp me during those three days! :D

Cheers and here's to a great 2013!

The Day I Attended Taylor's Anime Fest (TAF) 2012

One week after AniManGaki, it was TAF's turn to shine. I was unable to attend on Saturday (Day 1 of the two-day event) due to a sudden migraine attack, but I did manage to head there on the next day all the same.

Now I have not been attending to any TAF events before this, mostly due to a bitter experience I've had with the very first event that left a sour taste in my mouth, but I decided to attend this time to support some of my friends who were part of the organizing committee of this said event.

Please note that everything mentioned here is based on observation and what I had experienced on the said day :)

Let's begin with the very morning that I had arrived. I headed off to Taylor's Lakeside Campus with a friend who knew the way to the venue of TAF. It was a good thing that I was with her, for if I had gone there alone, I would have gotten temporarily lost trying to figure out the exact location of the hall (given that it was only my second visit to this college). All the same, it took me a while to second-guess where the hall was because there were no signage nor a trail of people (or a mob) that indicates the crowded popularity of an event venue.

Went in and asked for my media pass (I had given a call a few days back about this and received my confirmation that I'll be getting them on the day) but to my surprise, I was told that there wasn't any more Media passes. Seems like they had given it out to "unexpected people" who arrived the day before (remember, I didn't attend on Saturday) and so they ran out of passes. This was a rude shock to me because  not only did they not know how to deal with me (I was asking how could we resolve this, they suggested stamping my hand as a pass but no Media pass) the fact that the Media passes were simply given away to a bunch of people from a same band/group/society.

In the end, my friend helped me by crossing out the words "Doujin Booth Owner" and replaced it with "Media" instead. With a pen. Guess what, for the entire day, friends who saw me exclaimed, "Eh you opened a booth here? Where's your booth?" and while I didn't mind explaining the mishap, I was definitely annoyed. Some of you may scoff and say that it's silly for me to get mad over something so small, but to me, it's bad because it indicates that you, as the organizing committee, had not firmly allocate passes for media beforehand and gave them away freely when asked for it.

Strike one there for that.

Anyway I went in and surveyed the hall. It was quite well-lit with interesting booths that greeted you as you walked in.

Be greeted by a row of lovely figurines, and this beautiful girl as well :)

Learn the Japanese language the fun way with this Moekana card game

Met up with some friends who opened booths there, and we chatted for a bit. Some of them even grouped together to sell off their past costumes, wigs, props, shoes, and even scraps of fabrics! It was an interesting sale, and great for those who's looking for a bargain! :)

For sale: cosplay props, scraps of discarded fabric, shoes, wigs etc

Lovely pre-loved costumes that were up for grabs. I wish they were in my size :(

Funny story: As my friend and I were chatting by the costume booth, we kept turning our heads towards the stage wondering what was going on there and whether or not the cosplay competition had begun. Turns out it was just a random "game" thing that was going on...I think? =P

A friend whom had set up a booth on that day :)

The stage area, where it was pretty quiet. I was amused when I processed this photo, for that girl was actually posing for the camera when I wasn't even aiming my lens at her! Hahaha

There was a gaming section relatively close to the stage, and though I didn't really stand there to check out what were they all so hyped about, I had fun watching their expressions going "Oooooh!!!" and "Arghhhh!" from time to time!
Gamers Hangout?

Also not to forget the singing competition which happened some time after I had arrived. I didn't really stop to watch because I was hungry and had to leave the hall in search for food! But I did manage to stay long enough to listen to the very first contestant, who was pretty good!

Hello, judges for the singing competition!

Like most conventions that I know of, most cosplayers tend to loiter and 'hang out' at the outside of the hall. This was no exception. Met most of my cosplayer friends here and chit-chatted with them for a bit.

Hey look, there's onigiris for sale! I didn't try any of them though :(

I don't have many photos after I had my lunch mainly for two reasons:

  1. There wasn't much I could snap photos of that would seem like a repeat of what I had taken before this
  2. I was suddenly roped in to be a judge for the cosplay competition

Yep that's right. Little ol' me was suddenly roped in to be a judge. I was shocked and rather amused about this. Shocked, cause I didn't expect my friends (who were, like me, pulled in to be the judges at the very last minute) to bring me in. Amused, because this was so last minute and it was clear that they hadn't looked for the judges in advance instead of finding people to judge the competition last minute.

First time judging, I wondered what to do. Bad enough that my anime/manga/game knowledge was next to moot (I rarely keep track) there were no references at all for us to peruse and compare between the illustration and the cosplayer! In desperation, I had to use my phone and do a quick Google Image search for some contestants and roughly judge them from there. Sad, right?

Nevertheless, I did the best I could. Overall, I gotta admit that some contestants were pretty good and there were those who were decent enough. One thing I had noted, though, was the alarming display of concurrent Kingdom Hearts Organization XIII participants. Seriously, it was one after another! I vaguely remember Roxas and Axel, but I don't know the rest. Sadly, it was rather obvious that some of them had no idea what to do on stage. It looked as though they were just asked to be on stage as 'fillers'.

Once the preliminaries were done, we had some time off to get on with our socializing (and to do whatever else we wanted to do!). I ended up staying outside once more (there wasn't much to do in the hall) and chatted with some friends who were busy prepping up for a photoshoot.

Some time later, we were requested to return to the hall for the finals of the cosplay competition. Several thing I would like to stress out here is:

  1. We were asked to set the game play for the finals, which was in about...20 minutes time? I really had a look of "Uh, what?" on my face as we tried to brainstorm for game play ideas. First time as a judge and now this. Whoa okay.
  2. Lack of communication. One person tells us that we need to set the game play, and then another came to tell us that the cosplayers had agreed to perform based on 'special requests by judges'. My brain just went on a lockdown. What's what and HUH?

Oh right, finalists were chosen based on who we, the judges, had liked. Then again, our scorings were almost the same for all (on an average LOL).

So.

Emcee told us that the finals will begin at 4.20pm (it was roughly 4.10pm by then) and then he headed back stage to inform the rest of the participants. 5 minutes later, someone else with a microphone announced that "the hall will be closing at 4.30pm in preparation for the Matsuri event, so please clear the hall by then" (words are not exact, but you get the idea).

Whoa. So the cosplay competition will be held with no one in the hall? Friend and I started to *fantoi* (or in English terms, we began to "flip tables"). It was one mess after another and nope, we were all not amused.  BMJ (one of the judges) quickly resolved this by talking to them, but hey by then, about a quarter of them had already left the hall. Damage was done.

Found out later that BMJ was pretty irked at the fact that the committee had requested the vendors to pack up in 20 minutes (since they were closing the hall) which pretty much stinks since for sponsoring booths, they generally need more time to close off and pack up. Not a good way at all to treat your vendors :(

Anyway back to the finals. I suggested having random props to be given to the participants and they had to come up with a 2-3 minutes skit on stage. It was an easy idea and I remembered seeing a cosplay competition doing the same before this. The suggestion was accepted and the emcee headed off to booths asking if they would be so kind enough to lend us some items for their cosplay competition.

Now when we had suggested this idea to the emcee, one thing we had noted is that booth owners would want to know "what is in it for them" and came up with the idea of "promoting their booth by stating which props came from whom" before the start of the skit.

Guess what? That never happened 8)

Anyway once the judging was done (with someone hovering slightly impatiently for the results) we handed in our list and left. Each of us had something else to do by then. But hey, congrats to the top three winners! You guys really do deserve it! :) It was entertaining watching the lot of you perform, I admit, and I had fun laughing over the comedic displays in your skits too!

I didn't linger for Matsuri, though I happily snapped a quick photo of friends everywhere lounging by the side of the lake.
Apparently I had missed the "Gangnam Style" parody dance. I don't even know if that is a good or a bad thing *groan*

Overall, I'd say that this event needs a lot of cleaning up to do. My advice is to take tips and pointers from those who have had experience in organizing cosplay events, particularly on college level (start small, then move to the bigger picture). It doesn't hurt to ask, and if you do it right, you'll glean a lot of treasured knowledge about event organizing too! Perfect if you're a Communications student. If you're not, well, this experience would allow you to reach out to broader prospects out there one day.

The Aftermath of AniManGaki 2012

Check out that array of movies and such for sale!

It has been awhile since I have last attended an ACG event, and I believe this was the first event in months that I've gone to after a while! Initially, I wanted to skip this event and attend the upcoming event (Taylor's Asaban Fest) the following weekend (I had promised to attend!) but decided to just make my way there all the same.

So.

Months before, I had a plan to cosplay Princess Neptune for AniManGaki 2012. However, due to certain unforeseen circumstances (namely my other half, Uranus, cannot make it) I decided to cancel that said plan. Ah well, not much damage there.

Here's a quick brief of what AniManGaki is all about. Organized by the dedicated students of Sunway College, this event which had taken place in their own college over the past few years, finally decided to break free of norm and have it at the Sunway Convention Centre this year. The anticipation for this event was running high, particularly since they had allocated numerous slots for local bands and dancers for the stage performances.

Tickets were priced at RM15 per day, or RM25 if you'd prefer to attend both days. I was lucky to receive a free pair of tickets from my friend, so I suppose that's probably what made me decide to go in the end too! Hahaha =P

I'm not going to split my two-day report since I didn't hang around the hall much nor did I snap many photos during the said weekend, so here's what I did during AniManGaki 2012.

Day 1

Arrived later than expected, I reached Sunway Pyramid at about 11am (entrance opens at 10am). It was quite packed by then, particularly outside of the hall where there were booths lined up for games, figurine display, and Matsuri booths. There was also a Touhou booth which I briefly glimpsed as I walked by the place.

First peeve: Found out I was not allowed into the hall via the entrance from the parking lot at CP3 without a ticket. Now, the only way in was to walk across the parking lot to the closest elevator, head two levels down to Asian Avenue, and take the escalator up to the ticketing counter at the Convention Centre. Waste of time? Oh, yeah. Definitely. Fortunately my friend was there (she was holding my tickets then) so I gave her a call and 'lo and behold, I could enter!

On this day, I decided NOT to cosplay because of two reasons: I'd want to roam about freely meeting and greeting my friends...and I have absolutely no idea which costume should I recycle!

Took a quick tour in the hall (said hi to several booth owners that I know) and bought my Comic Fiesta pre-order tickets on the spot. For those wondering, this wasn't a pair of mock tickets but the real deal, so I'm rather nervous safekeeping it for myself (I tend to be scatterbrained after all). That pair of tickets cost RM35, and I decided to purchase the 8-bit "I LOVE CF" T-shirt that I had missed back then too! :D

The Exams Hall, where Otaku-ers get to test their knowledge and stand a chance to win a huge Miku plushie

When there's a performance, there's a crowd! There are times I find crowd-watching more entertaining than performances, even when the latter's awesome! XD

That done, I roamed around the hall a little longer and finally exited the hall. Now when I arrived here, I came alone. I was not meeting up with anyone, and my friend was helping out as a volunteer at the ticketing/ushering station. So typically, I got bored in less than an hour. Oddly enough I wasn't even enthusiastic enough to snap photos of cosplayers there, so let's just skip that, yes?

Why take photos of cosplayers when snapping photos of photographers taking photos of cosplayers prove to be more entertaining?

Took a photo of the very talented singer, Shiomaru (she's in that happy clown suit) with Potter by her side!

In the end, I decided to help out my friends (met a couple of them volunteering here!) at the entrance by ushering newcomers to the hall. In other words, I check for passes and make sure everyone who enters have their ticket-wrist tags lol. I think I had more fun there than I had in the hall (No offense guys, it's not you guys, it's just me being horrifically moody without my caffeine then!) though my feet suffered from standing too long in my wedges!

Anyone remembers Tenshi no Cafe? They were there to serve you too during this event!

Personally, I had fun on Day 1 mainly because I got to meet up with most of my friends whom I rarely meet unless during events. Had a great time chatting with everyone and helping out the AniManGaki committee when I can :)

Left early cause I was dead tired and needed rest since I'll be cosplaying the next day.

Guki (cosplaying Remilia Scarlet) and me, as we were manning the Ticketing/Security area haha

Arisa (cosplaying Comic Fiesta's female mascot - Coffy) and me. Happened to see her so decided to snap a quick one with her :D

Day 2

Arrived probably earlier than the day before, I reached Sunway Pyramid at about 10.30am I think. No makeup, no contacts, no costume donned on yet. Just me in my simple dress and flats. Met with Guki (meet friend who gave me the tickets haha) and had breakfast at Pappa Rich. Just as we were about to finish our meal, Ethel and KC came by to join us hahaha.

Side note, service at Pappa Rich was quite bad. Everyone hovered by the kitchen and didn't really pay attention to customers who were trying to grab their attention for something ._.; my toasted egg sandwich arrived AFTER Guki was done with her porridge and that was about, what, 10-15 minutes later? *sighs* Not gonna order that sandwich again, it didn't suit my palatte at all ._.

Anyway, we went looking for safety pins (I keep losing mine!) which we finally got from Guardian, and went back to the Convention Centre. Went off to the changing room to finally put on my cosplay costume for the day. To my surprise and delight, Cappy and Kids were there, prepping up for THEIR cosplay. So between the three of us, we prepped up our makeup and donned on our costumes. Though I left way earlier than them; they took hours to perfect their awesome bling-bling makeup! XD

In full honesty I do not know who they are supposed to be, but I believe the one on the right is cosplaying a kappa ^^;

Just like on Day 1, I helped out at the ticketing/security area once more. It was fun, though a pain in the neck. Basically between me and my friend, we had to warn off people from jumping over the velvet rope, be it volunteers, VIP, VVIP, or paid customers. It was hard, cause there were only the two of us. And when my friend asked for someone to relief us, NO ONE CAME. I guess we were THAT shorthanded on that day *sighs*

Virtual cookies for those who knows who they're supposed to be from :3

Walked about the hall, walked about Sunway Pyramid, and back around the hall again. Squealed when I found other cosplayers who were cosplaying in the same illustrated version as I was (Vocaloid: Sandplay of the Singing Dragon) and went off to snap a couple of group photos with them. This was awesome for me, cause I was there as a solo cosplayers actually hahahaha.

Meiko and Miku together! :D It was so random that we both had our customized masks on that day, and we don't know each other haha

Sandplay of the Singing Dragon (Vocaloid) : Gakupo, Meiko, Hatsune Miku, Kagamine Len & Rin

Sad to say I spent most of my time either helping out with the committee, or lounging upstairs  by the changing room towards the evening. But it was a pretty good event. Each time I peeked into the hall, I'd see good support from the audience to the stage performers. That's good, yes? :)

Was surprised yet happy to see my two friends, Nightress and Aiko, cosplaying Aurora and Snow White! :D

Left the event rather early due to lack of...activity. Either that or I was just dead tired and wanted to leave. Either either that or I'm just getting too darned old for ACG events hahahaha.

Mintos as Nichi Keito / Ivrogne from Star Driver

Another lovely photo of Mintos :D

Cappy as Neo Serenity from Sailor Moon

A couple of photos with my friends, just for the heck of it. We love snapping photos together, don't we? Hahahahaha =P

Cappy and me together :3

Guki and me :D

Mintos and me, posing together-gether hahaha

In conclusion, event wasn't too bad though I was bored easily. I suspect it's just me since everyone else seems to be enjoying themselves a lot :)

That's it for now! This blogpost took me a long time to complete even though it's not too complicated ;___; Will be posting up on the following ACG event that went on the week after this one soon! :D
